Women’s World Cup: South Africa captain Van Wyk ruled out with injury

South Africa captain Janine van Wyk has been ruled out of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup due to an injury.

The 36-year-old who plays for her own club (JVW FC) in South Africa, was not included in Desiree Ellis’ 36-woman provisional squad that was released this week.

Van Wyk made her Bayana Bayana debut in 2005 during an African Women’s Championship game against Nigeria and she has 183 international appearances under her belt.

“I have sustained an injury that I feel would impact my chances of performing at the highest level that is required to make the World Cup squad,”Van Wyk told CAF website.

“I have to turn down the call-up with a heavy heart, but also knowing that I am doing what is best for the team.”
