Women’s World Cup: Nigeria relying on Oshoala’s scoring prowess

The Super Falcons head into the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 in Australia and New Zealand as one of the ever-present teams and will rely heavily on the form of their star forward, Asisat Oshoala.

The Barcelona talisman has been in impeccable form all season, with 26 goals and six assists in 37 games, winning a treble with the Catalans, including the league title and the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

With her lightning pace, tricks and prowess in front of goal, the five-time African Women’s Player of the Year, who has bagged 29 goals for Nigeria, is surely one to be noticed in Oceania, as she would be looking to add to her tally and help the 11-time African champions past the quarter-final stage – their best ever finish at the Mundial.

Oshoala is arguably the most important player in Randy Waldrum’s team and it doesn’t take rocket science to see why.

Oshoala has scored for the Super Falcons in the previous two Women’s World Cups – in the 2015 and 2019 editions.

Although she missed the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, Oshoala’s presence in Australia comes a boost for Nigeria after their disappointing fourth-place at the WAFCON as she will be tasked to lead the team in front of goal and help them overcome their Group B hurdles against Canada, Australia and Republic of Ireland.
