Women’s World Cup: Lauren James offers Alozie apology

Lauren James has tendered an apology to Michelle Alozie after her foul in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup round of 16 clash between England and Nigeria in Brisbane on Monday.

Chelsea forward James’ stamped on Alozie’s back after going into a challenge with the Super Falcons defender. Referee Melissa Borjas initially handed James a yellow card but after VAR review upgrade it to a red card and sent her off. She could potentially miss the rest of the World Cup.

There has been outrage on social media from Nigerian fans on James’ foul on Alozie, with some claiming the sister of Chelsea full-back Reece James deserved an even harsher punishment than the red card while others rained insults at her.

Alozie took to Twitter to respond to fan’s criticism of James, telling them to be calm, and also saying she had nothing but respect for the England star.

“Abeg, rest. We are playing on the world’s stage. This game is one of passion, insurmountable emotions, and moments. All respect for Lauren James,” the Houston Dash player said.

James responded to Alozie’s tweet by apologising not only to her but to England fans who have also expressed disappointment by her action.

“All my love and respect to you. I am sorry for what happened. Also, for our England fans and my teammates, playing with and for you is my greatest honour and I promise to learn from my experience,” read the post.

James is England’s top scorer at the ongoing Women’s World Cup with three goals and three assists. The Lionesses will face Colombia after the South Americans defeat Jamaica 1-0 in Melbourne on Tuesday.
