Women’s World Cup: Donaldson proud of Jamaica players after exit

Jamaica manager Lorne Donaldson says he is proud of his players even as they exited the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup following their 1-0 loss to Colombia in the round of 16 on Tuesday.

Catalina Usme’s 51st-minute strike was more than enough to send Las Cafeteras to their first-ever quarter-final where they will take on England.

Jamaica’s World Cup journey ends failing to score a goal during the tournament and conceding just a goal which was against the Colombians. Donaldson is pleased with his players overall input having had inadequate preparations heading into the competition.

“First of all, just give Colombia credit. They were better than us tonight,” Donaldson said after the game.

“And I feel, you know, give them that credit. So, I’m just summing it up for us this week. Coming in with no games. It’s… I feel very happy for the players that they could perform at this level without getting adequate games to play.

“So, I am very pleased with them. And you know what? They gave it everything tonight. We weren’t very, very good tonight. But, you know, that’s football. And so they should be proud of themselves, and I’m very proud of them.”

Donaldson also stated that the country’s performance in Australia and New Zealand will be an inspiration for young girls back in Jamaica who choose a career path in football.

“It’s something we hope go well. You know, currently, Cedella Marley has a programme in Jamaica that she’s actually running. Okay. And it’s a very good programme for young girls. And hopefully, now we can get more young ladies involved in the programme,” he explained.

“And I think the girls watching this and people are up. You know, win or lose somebody, you know, they get something out of it. So, what I’m saying is everybody now in Jamaica can embrace women’s football and just make sure that from the primary school all the way up, you know, can say, okay, we want to do this.”

The 2023 Women’s World Cup represents Jamaica’s best performance at the Mundial having failed to pick a point in their maiden outing four years ago in France.
