Women’s Afrobasket 2023: Nigeria defeat Egypt, book automatic quarterfinals berth

The D’Tigress of Nigeria continued their rampant display at the 2023 Women’s Afrobasket in Kigali, Rwanda, with an 83-65 win over Egypt at the BK Arena on Sunday.

The defending champions made it two wins in as many games to top Group D and secure automatic qualification to the quarterfinals as leader of the group.

Rena Wakama’s ladies were dominant right from the jump with an 18-10 win in the first quarter. The second quarter was the same as they increased the deficit to 19 points with a 24-13 scoreline.

The North Americans mounted a comeback after the halftime break winning the third quarter 19-14 but D’Tigress stood firm for a home run in the fourth quarter to finish 27-23.

Amy Okonkwo whose three-point dagger late in the game quenched any thoughts of a possible comeback for Egypt, led Nigeria with a 29-point and 13-rebound double-double to go along with four assists and three steals

Murjanatu Musa (18 points and 7 rebounds) and Nicole Enabosi (10 points and 9 rebounds) both came off the bench to supply a combined 28 points and 16 rebounds in what was a convincing victory for Nigeria.

Metal Abdelgawad led the Egyptians, who won their first game, with 19 points, while co-starters Nadine Mohamed and Raneem Elgedawy both added 14 points and 15 points apiece, with the latter grabbing 10 rebounds.

Nigeria top the group with four points while Egypt finish in second with three points. The D’Tigress will wait to know their next opponent as they will be facing the winner in the game between Mozambique and the third-placed team in Group A.
