Wimbledon: Jabeur makes vow after back-to-back final loses

Ons Jabeur has vowed she will win a Grand Slam after she suffered a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Marketa Vondrousova in the 2023 Wimbledon women’s singles final on Saturday.

Vondrousova dispatched Jabeur in 80 minutes to land her first tennis major while Jabeur searches on for her first after reaching last year’s final but lost to Elena Rybakina whom she defeated in this year’s quarter-final.

The 28-year-old Tunisian acknowledged losing another Grand Slam final is a bitter pill to swallow but is not undeterred in her desire to bring a major title home for her country, the African continent and the Arab world.

“It’s going to be a tough day for me today. I’m not going to give up. I’m going to come back stronger and win a Grand Slam one day,” Jabeur said after the match.

“It was an amazing tournament for me. I wished I continued to the end. I want to thank my team for always believing in me.

“We are going to make it one day, I promise you.

“Thank you for coming, cheering for me, the energy is amazing from day one at Wimbledon. I appreciate your support. It’s been a tough journey but that’s tennis.

“I promise I will come back one day and win this tournament.”

Jabeur will have another attempt at winning a Grand Slam at the final major of the year, the US Open, next month. The Sousse resident reached the final at Flushing Meadows last year but lost in straight sets to Iga Swiatek.

Jabeur will remain in sixth place in the new WTA rankings to be released on Monday while Vondrousova will jump a massive 32 places into 10th place, a career-high for the 24-year-old Czech.
