Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has stated that the club’s four-game losing streak is a reason he signed a two-year contract extension, Afrosport reports.
The Catalan’s future at the Etihad Stadium has been up the air since the summer as his previous deal was going to expire at the end of the ongoing season.
There was no indication whether he would pen a new deal or leave the club after almost a decade. Guardiola however put all that speculation behind by agreeing a two-year extension until 2027 which means he would have spent a decade in the blue half of Manchester.
It however comes at a time when City are struggling with four consecutive defeats in all competitions which has seen them fall five points behind in the Premier League title.
Guardiola revealed that the club’s current losing streak which is a first in his managerial career and a first for City in 18 years spurred him commit his future a little longer.
“I felt I could not leave now, simple as that,” he told the club website.
“Don’t ask me the reason why. Maybe the four defeats were the reason why and I felt I cannot leave. I felt the club still want me or had the fact that we were together and that’s the reason why we sign.”
He added: “Firstly it’s because we won a lot otherwise you do not stay 11 years not even here in a place where I feel love.
“Here is a business and you have to win and have a contract but I know if you don’t win maybe I would not continue.
“I enjoy being here. I like my job. I like being the manager of this club.
“I said many times from many many years ago, the moment I will not have that feeling, even under contract, I will ring my chairman and CEO and say the best for the Club right now is I have to leave.
“I don’ have that feeling right now and that’s why I extended a little bit longer.”
