Werder Bremen’s Felix Agu to undergo surgery

Werder Bremen’s Felix Agu to undergo surgery

Werder Bremen have confirmed Felix Agu will not be able to return for the remainder of the Bundesliga season and will undergo surgery to treat the patellar tendon problems that have blighted him for much of the campaign.

The Nigerian full-back has been out of action since last October and has been limited to just three appearances all season.

Agu has been working his way back to fitness ever since but did not hit top shape to make a return and he will have his surgery carried out on Tuesday with a return date set for the summer.

“SV Werder Bremen will be without Felix Agu for the remainder of the 2022/23 season. Due to persistent patellar tendon problems, the 23-year-old is set to undergo surgery on 2nd May,” read a statement on the club website.

Clemens Fritz, the club’s head of football and scouting added: “Felix has been dealing with this issue since the end of last year. We have followed a conservative treatment approach thus far, which saw Felix able to return to training.

“Unfortunately, the problem has persisted and there’s a risk that it could develop into a reoccurring, long-term issue. Looking ahead to next season, and after consulting with the club, Felix has decided to undergo a minor surgical procedure, in order to be ready to go again in the summer.”

Agu has made 48 appearances for Werder Bremen since joining from Osnabruck in 2020, scoring two goals and providing four assists.

The 23-year-old has been capped by Germany at youth level and is eligible to play for the Nigeria national team.
