Wembanyama: How San Antonio Spurs star claimed back-to-back NBA awards

No. 1 draft pick Victor Wembanyama has won the Western Conference NBA rookie of the month award for February, the league announced on Monday night.

The 20-year-old San Antonio Spurs center, who won the award in January, has now claimed the rookie of the month award for the second consecutive time, tallying his rival, Chet Holmgren, who won the award in October, November, and December.

In February, Wembanyama averaged 21.3 points, 10.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 3.9 blocks per game in 12 games for San Antonio. He had the most games (five) with at least 20+ points, 10+ rebounds, and 5+ blocks in the month.

The 7-foot-4 Frenchman currently leads both the NBA and the 2023 rookie class in blocks per game, as his 3.92 average is the most of any player in the league.

The Spurs No. 1 leads all rookies in scoring, rebounding, steals, and blocks, as he also currently has nine double-doubles this season and one triple-double game as he continues his journey to claim the Wilt Chamberlain Trophy for the rookie of the year award.

Wembanyama, who is currently averaging 20.9 points, 10.2 rebounds, 1.3 steals, and 3.4 blocks per game across 55 games, is also one of six players and the only non-All-Star averaging more than 20 points and 10 rebounds per game in the 2023–24 NBA season.
