Stan Wawrinka has announced he will retire from professional tennis at the end of the 2026 season, Afrosport reports.
The three-time Grand Slam champion, said the decision will bring an end to a career that began in 2002 and spanned more than two decades.
Wawrinka, who will turn 41 next March, rose from an underdog to one of the most feared players of his generation during his peak years.
He won the Australian Open in 2014 after beating Rafael Nadal in the final, before defeating Novak Djokovic to claim the French Open in 2015 and the US Open in 2016.
Wawrinka also reached a career-high world ranking of third, won 16 ATP titles, claimed Olympic doubles gold with Roger Federer in 2008 and helped Switzerland win the Davis Cup in 2014.
The Swiss star took to social media to announce the news of his impending retirement, adding that he still wants to push himself and finish his career on a positive note.
“Every book needs an ending. It’s time to write the final chapter of my career as a professional tennis player. 2026 will be my last year on tour,” he wrote on Instagram.
“I still want to push my limits and finish this journey on the best note possible. I still have dreams in this sport. I’ve enjoyed every part of what tennis has given me, especially the emotions I feel playing in front of you.
“I’m looking forward to seeing you one more time, all around the world. One last push.”
Wawrinka is currently ranked outside the top 150 after a series of injuries and surgeries, and has not reached a Grand Slam quarter-final since 2020.
