Newcastle United have issued a firm response to Alexander Isak after the Swedish striker publicly accused the club of “broken promises” in a viral social media post, Afrosport reports.
Isak, whose future at St James’ Park remains uncertain, took to Instagram on Tuesday with a strongly-worded statement, alleging that the Magpies had failed to honour a prior agreement regarding his potential departure.
The 25-year-old has informed the Magpies of his desire to explore a new challenge away from Tyneside, with Liverpool believed to be interested in securing his services. The Reds had a £110 million offer turned down, as Newcastle continue to hold out for a higher fee and a suitable replacement before considering any deal.
Newcastle, in an official statement, expressed their disappointment with Isak’s public remarks, firmly denying the existence of any such agreement allowing him to leave this summer.
“We are disappointed to have been alerted to a social media post by Alexander Isak this evening,” a club stated. “We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer.”
Newcastle’s transfer window has been fraught with frustration, having missed out on top forward targets such as Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko, who opted for moves to Liverpool and Manchester United respectively.
Despite the ongoing saga, the club remain determined to keep their key players, confirming that Isak is still very much a part of their plans — and welcome to return to the squad when ready.
“We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views,” the statement continued.
“As explained to Alex and his representatives, we must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and our supporters in all decisions and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired. We do not foresee those conditions being met.
“This is a proud football club with proud traditions and we strive to retain our family feel. Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates.”
The Magpies began their Premier League campaign with a goalless draw against 10-man Aston Villa on Saturday, with Anthony Gordon leading the line in the absence of Isak.
Their search for a new forward continues, with Brentford’s Yoane Wissa reportedly emerging as a possible option before the window closes.
Newcastle will face Liverpool next on Monday, 25 August — a fixture now filled with emotional interest, given the transfer tensions between both clubs this summer.
