Wan-Bissaka switches allegiance to DR Congo, earns first call-up for June friendlies

West Ham United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka has chosen to represent the Democratic Republic of Congo and has been called up to the national team ahead of June’s international window, Afrosport reports.

Wan Bissaka on Thursday was handed a first-call up by head coach Sebastien Desabre in his 27-man squad for next month’s international friendlies against Mali and Madagascar, respectively.

The 27-year-old, born in England to Congolese parents, previously made one appearance for DR Congo’s under-20 team in 2015 before returning to represent England at both the U20 and U21 levels.

The Leopards will take on the Eagles of Mali on 5 June before battling Madagascar’s Barea on 8 June, with both games expected to take place at Stade de la Source in Orleans, France.

Wan-Bissaka, meanwhile, is included in a star-studded squad, with Desabre inviting regulars like Arthur Masuaku and Chancel Mbembe in defence, midfielders Theo Bongonda and Meschak Elia, as well as forwards Yoane Wissa and Cedric Bakambu.
