The Black Princesses of Ghana defeated the Falconets of Nigeria 3-1 on penalties to lift the title of the maiden WAFU Zone B U-20 Women’s Cup.
Saturday’s encounter ended 1-1 in regulation time and the winner was decided in a nervy penalty shoot-out.
Ghana took the lead in Kumasi through Stella Nyamekye’s penalty in the 38th minute after Comfort Owusu was fouled.
Christopher Danjuma’s ladies started the game brightly with chances upon chances but they failed to hit the back of the net as the opening 45 minutes ended 1-0.
The game restarted with the same momentum from Nigeria, but Ghana goalkeeper Afi Amenyaku was up to the task with fine saves.
Unfortunately, Amenyaku committed a howler with four minutes left on the clock as Flourish Sabastien notched a precious equaliser for the Falconets.
It was straight to penalty shoot-out after the regular 90 minutes and goalkeeper Amenyaku to save the night for the Black Princesses with her heroics.
She saved Nigeria’s first two penalty attempts through Chidinma Ogbuchi, Sabastine while Onyenezide missed the target in the third attempt and Chinyere Kalu scored Nigeria’s only effort.
