WAFCON 2025: Nigeria’s Yemisi Akintoye named among referees for tournament

Nigerian referee Yemisi Akintoye has been named among the 18 officials selected by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to officiate at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, Afrosport reports.

Akintoye, a member of the Lagos State Football Referees Council, became a FIFA-certified official in 2020.

She earned the call-up to officiate at the WAFCON after reportedly excelling at the tournament’s preparatory course held in Cairo earlier this month.

The program included rigorous technical evaluations, fitness tests, and decision-making assessments designed to simulate match-day conditions.

Akintoye has officiated at several tournaments, including the CAF Women’s Champions League, WAFU B U-20 Championship and WAFU B Women’s Champions League.

The 2024 WAFCON in Morocco will take place from 5-26 July 2025.

South Africa’s Banyana Banyana are the defending champions following a 2-1 over the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Super Falcons are drawn in Group B with Tunisia, Botswana and Algeria.
