WAFCON 2024: South Africa qualify to defend title in Morocco

South Africa have qualified for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after overcoming Burkina Faso 2-0 (3-1 on aggregate) at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Monday.

After a 1-1 draw between the teams in the first leg, Banyana Banyana scored two second-half goals through Linda Motlhalo and Nicole Michael.

Motlhalo opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 56th minute and Michael doubled the lead with four minutes left on the clock.

South Africa now have the opportunity to defend the WAFCON title they lifted in Morocco in 2022, again in the North African country in 2024.

The encounter was also Janine Van Wyk’s final appearance for Banyana Banyana, rounding up her illustrious performances for the current Africa’s women champions.

She played the first seven minutes of Monday’s game before she was replaced by Lebohang Ramalepe.

The 36-year-old wrapped up her international career with 185 games, making her the most-capped African player
