Kenya’s Harambee Starlets have quashed Cameroon’s hopes of qualifying for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco after defeating them 4-3 on penalties on Wednesday.
Cynthia Shilwatso scored a second-half goal that cancelled out Cameroon’s 1-0 lead from the first-leg and forced the encounter into the penalty shoot-out.
Cameroon key players including Nchout Ajara, Toko Njoya were in action but Charlene Meyong and Claudine Fallone failed to convert their penalty attempts.
Kenya are through to the second round of the qualifiers as they target a return to the premier women’s football tournament on the African continent since their debut appearance in Cameroon back in 2016.
The Harambee Starlets will now face Botswana who thrashed Gabon 7-1 on aggregate.
For the first time in the tournament’s history, the Indomitable Lionesses will not participate in the WAFCON and their best finish in the competition has been as runners-up in 1991, 2004, 2014 and 2016.
