The Confederation of African Football has confirmed the trio of Salima Mukansanga, Fatiha Laassiri, and Andile Dlamini as the assistants for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) draw scheduled for Friday, November 22.
The draw for the 13th edition of the WAFCON will take place at the Mohammed VI Technical Centre in Sale, Morocco, and will begin at 8 p.m. local time (same as Nigerian time).
Mukansanga, a referee from Rwanda, as well as former Morocco international Laassiri and Banyana Banyana goalkeeper Dlamini, will take up the responsibilities of draw assistants.
Mukansanga is renowned for being the first woman to referee a game at the Africa Cup of Nations when she took charge of the match between Zimbabwe and Guinea at AFCON 2021 in Cameroon two years ago. She also made history as the first female African to officiate at a men’s World Cup when she achieved the feat in Qatar in the same year.
Laassiri, on the other hand, represented Morocco at different international tournaments, and since retiring, she has become a coach and an advocate for women’s football development.
Dlamini, who is still active, is one of Africa’s best goalkeepers and was part of the triumphant South African team that won the last WAFCON in Morocco in 2022.
The WAFCON 2024 draw will determine the opponent of each of the 12 participating teams, with the tournament set to run from July 5 to 26, 2025, in Morocco.
South Africa’s Banyana Banyana are the current champions of the competition, having defeated hosts Morocco 2-1 in the final in 2022.
