Van Dijk refuses to dwell on Liverpool Merseyside Derby draw with Everton

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has refused to dwell on Wednesday night’s 2-2 Premier League draw with Everton, Afrosport reports.

The fixture was the final Merseyside Derby to be played at Goodison Park and lived up to its expectations as an energy-filled encounter with James Tarkowski netting late in added time to deny the Reds going nine points clear at the top of the table.

Reacting to the result, Van Dijk said: “I think the feeling right now is obviously disappointment, that’s pretty obvious, and it will be for today and tonight. But from tomorrow we focus on Wolves and we try to get the three points then and so on and so on.

“We all know that we have a lot of games up until the international break so there is no point to dwell too much on this result. We wanted to win here, we could have won here, maybe we should have won here. But it is what it is – we take it and move on.”

Despite the result, Van Dijk believes Liverpool have put themselves in a good position to challenge for major honours at the end of the season.

“I think we have put ourselves in a very good position and that’s down to hard work, quality and consistency and I encourage everyone to just look at ourselves, try to win every game ahead of us and don’t look at what others do and what other teams are trying to do,” the Netherlands international added.

“Just focus on ourselves, try to be our best version and get three points on the table in each and every game ahead of us. I include the fans with that as well.

“It will be a very intense last part of the season but let’s go and enjoy it. We have put ourselves in a good position so let’s go out there and keep going.”

Aside from Liverpool leading the Premier League, they have progressed to the knockout phase of the UEFA Champions League and have reached the final of the EFL Cup where they will face Newcastle United.
