US Open announces record $90m prize money for 2025 tournament

Organisers of the US Open on Wednesday announced an increase in the prize money for this year’s tournament, which they claim is “the largest purse in tennis history”, Afrosport reports.

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) has confirmed a record pot of $90 million for the event—a 20 percent increase from last year’s $75m purse.

This places the US Open well ahead of the three other Grand Slams. Wimbledon gave out approximately $71m this year, the French Open spent $65.5m, and the Australian Open offered roughly $63m.

It follows a letter the top 20 men’s and women’s players sent to the four Grand Slams earlier this year, requesting for a higher share of the revenue generated by the major tournaments.

“The US Open has made a deliberate and concerted effort to ensure double-digit percentage increases from 2024 in all rounds of all events for all players, while at the same time significantly increasing the percentage of prize money for athletes playing deep into the singles draws,” USTA said in a statement.

The 2025 US Open men’s and women’s singles champions will get $5m each, a 39% increase on 2024 when it was $3.6m.

Players eliminated in the first round at the US Open will earn $110,000, which is an increase of 10%.

Meanwhile, purse size in the men’s and women’s doubles at this year’s US Open have also witnessed a 23% increase from 2024, with $4.78m on offer.

A record $1m will also be given to the winners of the men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles per team. The prize money for the men’s and women’s qualifying tournaments will increase by 10% to a record $8m.

The organisers also confirmed the provision of $5m to aid the athletes with expenses ranging from travel to housing—this pertains to all the players in the main draw and qualifying tournaments.

Additionally, the players will “receive free racquet stringing of up to five racquets per round.”

The 2025 US Open is scheduled to take place at Flushing Meadows from 24 August until 7 September.
