The Super Eagles have reached the final of the Unity Cup 2025 after claiming bragging rights with a 2-1 win over Ghana in the Jollof derby on Wednesday night, Afrosport reports.
The Nigerians started the brighter of the two West African rivals at the Gtech Community Stadium in London. Cyriel Dessers was brought down in the box in the fourth minute, but no penalty was awarded by Premier League referee Stuart Attwell.
The Rangers forward then put the Super Eagles in front after 14 minutes, connecting with a cross from Remo Stars right-back Ismaila Sodiq before cooly slotting the ball into the back of the net.
It was 2-0 five minutes later when a Samuel Chukwueze free kick took a touch off Ghana midfielder Razak Simpson on the way in and recorded as an own goal.
Nigeria’s Stanley Nwabali almost caused an error in the 29th minute when he misplaced a pass that almost resulted in a goal, but the Chippa United goalkeeper was quick to react and make a sharp save.
Brentford midfielder Frank Onyeka tried his luck from range two minutes before the half-time break, but his effort took a heavy deflection off a Ghanaian defender for a corner kick.
Ghana, meanwhile, were close to pulling one goal back in the 65th minute, but Nwabali was once again alert to thwart the danger.
Substitute and Sevilla loanee Kelechi Iheanacho thought he had scored a third goal for Nigeria a few moments later, but his effort was rightly ruled out for offside.
The Black Stars finally got their goal in the 70th minute when Coventry City forward Brandon Thomas-Asante sent in a half volley beyond Nwabali’s reach after connecting with a fine cross from Ebenezer Annan.
Otto Addo’s men were close to finding a second goal five minutes later, but captain and Leicester City forward Jordan Ayew failed to connect with a well-worked cross that fell into his path.
Substitute and Cercle Brugge midfielder Abu Francis was the next to go close for Ghana in the 89th minute, but Nwabali made another fantastic save.
