UEFA Champions League : Bidding process reopened as Milan lose final hosting rights

UEFA announced on Tuesday that the 2027 men’s Champions League final will no longer be held in Milan due to ongoing uncertainty surrounding the future of the San Siro stadium.

The European football governing body has officially withdrawn the stadium as host for the final particularly because due to uncertainty surrounding the stadium’s refurbishment plans.

The municipality of Milan couldn’t guarantee that the stadium and its surroundings wouldn’t be impacted by the renovation works, prompting UEFA to reopen the bidding process to find a suitable replacement.

This decision comes after Milan was initially awarded the hosting rights in May. However, with both AC Milan and Inter considering alternative stadium options due to funding issues, the future of San Siro remains uncertain.

UEFA aims to announce the new host venue by May or June 2025 as Rome’s Stadio Olimpico is being considered among the potential replacements, with Italy’s football federation exploring options to keep the Champions League final in the country.

The San Siro stadium has hosted several iconic Champions League finals, including the 2016 final between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid. Its future remains shrouded in doubt, with demolition a possible outcome if refurbishment funds cannot be secured.
