UECL: Moffi on target as OGC Nice progress to quarter-final

Super Eagles forward Terem Moffi continued his impressive goalscoring form for OGC Nice as he scored one and provided another in the French side’s 3-1 win over FC Sheriff in the UEFA Europa Conference League Round of 16 second leg on Thursday.

Les Aiglons were victorious in the first leg in Moldova courtesy of Ayoub Amraoui’s lone strike, and they were in control of the return leg at the Allianz Riviera with Gaten Laborde breaking the deadlock inside 30 minute.

It became 2-0 to Nice in the 53rd minute, thanks to a composed finish from Moffi. The Nigeria international – who was recently called up to the Super Eagles squad for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier doubleheader against Guinea-Bissau – then turned provider for Bilal Brahimi’s goal 11 minutes from time.

It is the second consecutive game Moffi has scored and assisted for Nice having done so in their 2-2 Ligue 1 draw with Moses Simon’s Nantes at the weekend. The Nice loanee takes his season tally to 16 goals and two assists in 26 games this campaign.

In another Europa Conference League match, Algerian forward Islam Slimani netted the only goal as Anderlecht stunned Samuel Chukwueze’s Villarreal with a 1-0 win at Estadio de la Ceramica to progress 2-1 on aggregate after a 1-1 stalemate in the reverse fixture.

The Yellow Submarines found no way through on their own turf with Slimani’s cool finish in the 73rd minute making the difference.

The Europa Conference League quarter-final and semi-final draw will hold at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday.
