UECL: Chelsea boss Maresca stresses on the importance of winning competition

‘Anything can happen’ – Bilbao boss Valverde upbeat ahead of UEL semi-final second leg

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has emphasised it is 100% important for his team to win this season’s UEFA Conference League, Afrosport reports.

The Blues have been considered favourites to lift the third-tier European competition owing to their gulf in class from the rest of the participating teams.

The West London outfit already have one leg in the final having defeated Swedish side Djurgarden 4-1 in the semi-final first leg.

Maresca now wants his team to go all out and make history in becoming the first team to win all European trophies (Champions League, Europa League and Conference League).

“[The UEFA Europa Conference League is] very important. Very important. For sure, 100 per cent,” the Italian tactician said.

“For different reasons, but the main reason is because we want this club winning trophies. In this moment, we are in the Conference. So, we have to try to win the trophy in the competition that we are in. So, yes, it is important personally.

“But, for me, it is much more important for the club, for the fans. We said many times, that this is the only trophy that Chelsea did not win in the past, and Chelsea can become the first club in Europe to win all the European competitions. So, it is also good for the club.”

If Chelsea scale through to the final, they will face either Real Betis or two-time Conference League runners-up Fiorentina.
