UCL: Xabi Alonso optimistic of Leverkusen progress after heavy defeat to Liverpool

Xabi Alonso is confident that Bayer Leverkusen can progress to the knockout phase of the UEFA Champions League despite their heavy 4-0 loss to Liverpool on Tuesday, Afrosport reports.

A second half blitz from the Reds handed Alonso a forgettable night on his return to Anfield.

The result left Leverkusen in 11th place with seven points, the same point as nine teams sitting between sixth and 14th place, with four games left to go.

“…We have come to Anfield, probably the toughest that we can have. So, I would say that with seven points and the next four, three at home that we are in a good position to fight for the chances to go through,” Xabi Alonso said.

“That’s the main goal – to go through the next round. If closer to the eight, even in the eight (games) will be great. But, you know, we are not happy today, but it’s not the end of the world.

“Still four games to go. A lot of hopes and a lot of challenging games…We will be thinking about the next one. And we will have time to see the positives as well, and the negatives that will have to improve.”

Leverkusen will travel to Bochum in the Bundesliga this weekend before the commencement of the November international break.
