UCL: Guirassy sets African record in Dortmund win over Barcelona

Serhou Guirassy set a series of African records in Borussia Dortmund’ 3-1 win over Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg on Tuesday night, Afrosport reports.

The Guinea forward scored a hat-trick, making him the first African to do so against the Catalan giants in the competition.

The 29-year-old was also the first African player to score a hat-trick in the Champions League quarter-finals.

He has increased his tally in the competition this season to 13 goals, making him the top scorer ahead of Barcelona’s Raphinha who has 12 goals.

It is the most goals by an African in a single Champions League season and the most by a Dortmund player, surpassing the 11 goals by Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland during the 2012-13 and 2020-21 seasons respectively.

He also surpassed the African tally of Sebastian Haller with Ajax during the 2021-22 season and 10 by Liverpool’s Stadio Mane and Mohamed Salah during the 2017-18 campaign.

Speaking on his new milestone, Guirassy said:”I’m proud because we played a great game, and I think the fans were very satisfied.

“The 4-0 scoreline in Barcelona was slightly too much to come back from. It’s a shame that we were too far behind in the match of the year. That will serve us as a lesson for future matches.

“But we fought until the end. Barcelona have a brilliant team, we’re also a brilliant team. It’s lovely to be the top goalscorer in the Champions League. There are very good players.

“Being first means that I’m a good striker. But I can’t do it alone, without the team. It’s a shame that the competition ends today.”

Guirassy has scored a total of 28 goals in 40 competitive games this season.
