UCL: Flamingo scores winner as PSV stun Juventus in extra time to reach last 16

Dutch defender Ryan Flamingo was the hero as PSV Eindhoven beat Juventus 3-1 after extra time at Philips Stadium on Wednesday to progress into the UEFA Champions League last 16, Afrosport reports.

The 22-year-old scored in the 98th minute to give the Dutch side a deserved win as they secured a hard-fought 4-3 aggregate victory over Juventus to set up a last 16 encounter against either Arsenal or Inter Milan.

PSV entered the game with a 2-1 deficit after last week’s first leg in Turin, but Peter Bosz’s side did not look short of confidence as they looked the better side after a goalless first half.

The hosts deservedly got the lead eight minutes into the second half through veteran Croatian winger Ivan Perisic. The 36-year-old fired the ball into the far corner after some nice play down the left by Noa Lang.

Juventus, however, fought back, with American forward Timothy Weah drawing the Old Lady level in the 63rd minute. Teun Koopmeiners’ set-piece was poorly dealt with by PSV’s defence and the ball fell for Weah, whose ferocious strike found the bottom corner.

PSV regained their lead 11 minutes later through Moroccan midfielder Ismael Saibari, with the 24-year-old finding the back of the net from close range.

The game headed for extra time with the aggregate score locked at 3-3, and Flamingo completed a remarkable turnaround for PSV with a close-range finish after Federico Gatti and Michele Di Gregorio failed to deal with the ball.

It was a painful defeat for Juventus as the Italians lost a Champions League knockout tie having won the first leg for a first time. However, for PSV, it was a contrast, with the Dutch club winning their first knockout match in the competition since 2007.
