U23 AFCON: Ghana coach Tanko confident Black Meteors can handle Morocco

Ghana U-23 coach Ibrahim Tanko is confident his team has what it takes to get a positive result against the 2023 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations hosts Morocco.

Both sides take on each other at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Rabat on Tuesday evening with victory for either side booking their spot in the semi-finals.

The Atlas Lions recorded a late 2-1 win over Guinea in their opener while the Ghanaians defeated Congo 3-2 but had a scare as the Central Africans staged a comeback with two goals in injury time.

Regardless of massive home support playing to Morocco’s advantage, Tanko is pumped up for the game.

“These are the matches we live for. We will rise to the occasion,” he said on the CAF website.

“The home crowd will be against us, the atmosphere will be electric, and it provides an opportunity for us to assess our players’ reactions in such situations.”

Morocco coach Issame Charai meanwhile is looking towards the support of the fans to give his team the needed victory while also stating his team have studied Ghana and has spotted their weakness.

“All Moroccans have a significant part to play,” he said. “The fans must rally behind the players from the outset. In our first match against Guinea, the fans’ unwavering support propelled us forward, making a notable impact.

“We analyzed Ghana’s match against Congo. They possess a formidable offensive threat and display remarkable speed. However, we also identified areas of vulnerability within their team.”

The other Group A game will be between Guinea and Congo at the same venue on Tuesday night.
