U20 World Cup: Nigeria vs Dominican Republic – All you need to know & how to watch

U-20 AFCON: 10-man Flying Eagles suffer opening defeat to Senegal

Nigeria and Dominican Republic are set for their opening Group D fixture at the FIFA U-20 World Cup on Sunday, May 21.

The game would be the first meeting between the Flying Eagles and the Caribbean nation in the youth competition.

The game will take place at the 42,000-capacity Estadio Malvinas Argentinas in Mendoza.

Previous record at U20 World Cup

Nigeria are two-time runners-up at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, losing the final games in the 1989 and 2005 editions. They have made 12 appearances in the competition since their debut outing in 1981 but they have failed to go beyond the Round of 16 stage in their last three appearances.

Dominican Republic, meanwhile, are one of the debutants in Argentina.

Qualification for U20 World Cup

The Flying Eagles qualified for the 23rd edition of the U20 World Cup after settling for a third-place finish at the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Egypt back in March, while the Dominican Republic finished second in the CONCACAF U-20 Championship after losing 6-0 to the USA in the final.

The continental feat made Dominican Republic U20 squad the first selection to represent the country at a FIFA World Cup for any age level or gender.
