Gambia were knocked out of the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup after losing 1-0 to Uruguay in the Round of 16 at the Estadio Santiago del Estero on Thursday.
The Young Scorpions progressed to knockout stage after finishing top of Group F with seven points ahead of South Korea, France and Honduras.
It was however a fiesty affair in Santiago del Estero as Gambia’s Mansour Mbye received a straight red card for a foul in the 17th minute before Luciano Rodriguez got his marching orders in added time of the first half for violent conduct.
Despite both teams being a man less, it was the Uruguayans that made the difference in the game thanks to Anderson Duarte’s low shot from outside the box in the 65th minute.
The Celeste will get to play the high-flying United States in the quarter-finals on Sunday at the same venue while for Gambia, they join Tunisia in exiting the tournament after the North African suffered a 4-1 defeat to 10-man Brazil.
The Flying Eagles of Nigeria are the only African representatives left in the competition following their outstanding 2-0 win over hosts Argentina. They will take on South Korea on Sunday also in Santiago del Estero.
