U17 World Cup: Mali put five past Mexico to reach quarter-finals

The Mali U-17 nation team reached the quarter-finals of the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup after defeating Mexico 5-0 at the Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium in Tuesday morning’s round of 16 clash.

The Young Eagles finished second in Group B behind Spain while El Tri finished second in Group F behind Germany.

The Mexicans were no match for the Malians in Surabaya and Soumaila Coulibaly’s side were 2-0 up in the opening 13 minutes thanks to Mahmoud Barry’s brace. Ibrahim Diarra was the next to add his name on the scoresheet before Ibrahim Kanate made it 4-0 six minutes to the halftime break.

Ange Tia put the final nail in the coffin in the 50th minute off Barry’s assist.

The other simultaneous round of 16 tie on Tuesday morning saw Germany defeat the United States 3-2.

Afternoon action will see an all-South American affair between Argentina and Venezuela in Bandung while Morocco will tackle Iran in Surabaya with the winner facing Mali in the quarter-finals.
