U20 AFCON: Tunisia coach Sellimi reacts to Zambia win

Tunisia head coach, Adel Sellimi, has expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance in their victory against Zambia in their final group match on Monday.

The Young Carthage Eagles of Tunisia ramped up their group action at the ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations with an important 2-1 victory over Zambia to finish second in Group C and progress to the quarterfinals.

“We were not in a good position in the group and we needed to win in order to qualify,” Sellimi told the media.

“We performed well and succeeded in reaching our goal. The team’s performance is gradually improving and we thank God for qualifying.”

“We took advantage of the chances and succeeded in scoring but overall, they are a very good team,” the 51-year-old former Tunisian international added.

The Sellimi-led side came into the tie against the Junior Chipolopolos in third place with a point, knowing that a win was vital if they were to secure a guaranteed place in the knockout phase of the tournament.

Goals from Jibril Othman in the 31st minute and Mohamed Dhaoui in the 59th minute, either side of Kingstone Mutandwa’s 57th minute equalizer, proved enough to help the COSAFA champions claim all available points and finish with four points, five behind Gambia, who finished atop the group, while Benin finished third and Zambia bowed out as the bottom team.

Tunisia will lock horns with Congo in the quarterfinals of the tournament at the Cairo International Stadium on Friday, March 3, at 6pm.
