Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams has been awarded a wild card for this month’s US Open, Afrosport reports.
The 45-year-old made a remarkable return to competitive tennis last month after more than a year away from the sport.
Williams defeated fellow American Peyton Stearns in the opening round of the Washington Open before falling to Magdalena Frech in the next match. She also exited in the first round of the Cincinnati Masters last week, losing to Spain’s Jessica Bouzas.
Her wild card entry means the two-time US Open champion will become the oldest singles player to compete at Flushing Meadows since 1981, when 47-year-old Renee Richards took part.
Williams, who lifted her first US Open title in 2000, is set for her 25th appearance at the New York Grand Slam.
She is also expected to feature in the revamped mixed doubles at the US Open alongside Reilly Opelka, having received a wild card for the event last month.
The US Open is scheduled to take place from 24 August to 7 September in New York.
