Tunisia knocked out of World Cup despite beating France

Tunisia have been eliminated from the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar despite their 1-0 victory over reigning champions, France on Wednesday evening.

The Carthage Eagles secured the hard-fought result, thanks to Wahbi Khazri’s goal in the 58th minute.

The Montpellier star has etched his name in the record books, by becoming the first African player to score a goal in three successive World Cup starts (against Panama and Argentina in 2018).

The victory was not enough for Tunisia to progress to the knockout stage in Qatar as they finished third in Group D after Australia defeated Denmark 1-0 to sit in the second spot.

France, however, are unmoved from the top spot after scoring six goals in their first two wins in Group D.

Wednesday’s elimination extends Tunisia’s struggle in the history of the FIFA World Cup as they are yet to advance from the group stage since their maiden appearance in 1978.

Senegal remain the only African team to have qualified for the round of 16 in Qatar as Morocco, Ghana and Cameroon await their fate in their final round of matches.
