The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) have formally announced the appointment of Jonathan McKinstry as the new head coach of the national team.
The Northern Irishman replaces Belgian Tom Saintfiet who left the team after their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations campaign in the Ivory Coast where they failed to win a single game and finished bottom behind Senegal, Cameroon and Guinea in Group C
After more than three months of searching, the GFF have now chosen McKinstry who will take charge from June 1 and ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Seychelles and Gabon.
“The GFF wishes to congratulate and welcome our new gaffer Jonathan McKinstry on his appointment as Scorpions Coach,” read a statement on X.
“Jonny, a former Sierra Leone, Uganda and Rwanda coach is the current manager of Gor Mahia FC in Kenya and will take over from 1st June 2024.”

McKinstry is currently in charge of Kenyan club Gor Mahia and led them to their 21st Premier League title over the weekend.
He has also managed the Sierra Leone, Rwanda and Uganda national teams in the past as well as Lithuanian club Kauno Zalgiris and Bangladeshi outfit Saif SC.
