Team Lagos triumph in maiden Wheelchair Basketball League

Team Lagos defeated Team Oyo 43-33 in the final of the Fantastic Four to clinch the maiden edition of the Betking Wheelchair Basketball League League in Abuja.

Lagos led Oyo in the first quarter 15-13 before extending the lead by five points to head into half time with a 25-20 lead.

An additional five points were scored in the third quarter including a three pointer to make it 33-26. They went on to add 10 points in the fourth quarter to ensure they made history as the first Wheelchair Basketball team to win the league.

Lagos coach Michael Owoyele stated that togetherness within the team helped them to ultimate glory.

“We were devoted to the game, we trained together before the competition. I told the team not to be selfish and communication was instrumental to our victory,” he said.

“If you will recall, we defeated Team Oyo in the Atlantic Conference; I must confess they have a fantastic set of players. We were determined to win the league and wanted to make Lagos proud.”

In the third place game, Team Kwara defeated Team Kano 39-7 to take the bronze medal.

Lagos took home the largest share of the jackpot with a prize money of ₦500,000 while Oyo was awarded ₦300,000 and Kwara ₦ 200,000.

President of the Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Federation, Seyi Johnson, praised the players for their tenacity during the competition and revealed that the next competition on calendar will be the President’s Cup in Edo State which will coincide with the 2025 Paralympic Games in Paris.
