Super Eagles fall in latest FIFA world rankings

2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Super Eagles playing with fire after Lesotho draw

The Super Eagles have dropped two places to 42nd in the latest world ranking released by global football body FIFA.

This comes on the back of the three-time African champions recording 1-1 draws against lowly-ranked Lesotho and Zimbabwe in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers last month, making it three draws in four games stretching back to the October international break when they played Saudi Arabia and Mozambique.

Nigeria’s ranking in Africa however remains the same in sixth and they will be hoping to climb higher up the rankings with a strong outing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast in January.

Morocco remain the highest ranked African side, occupying 13th in the world followed by Senegal in 20th. Tunisia remain third in Africa but rose four places up to 28th in the world. There were also rises globally for Africa’s fourth and fifth ranked sides in Algeria and Egypt who jumped up to 30th and 33rd respectively.

Ivory Coast moved two places up to 50th globally but there was a three-place drop for Cameroon from 43rd to 46th. Mali dropped four places to 51st while Burkina Faso dropped one place to 57th likewise neighbours Ghana who dropped to 61st. There were two place drops for DR Congo and South Africa to 66th and 67th respectively.

Comoros were the biggest gainers globally following their huge 1-0 win over Ghana in last month’s World Cup qualifiers. It was able to move them nine places up to to an historic high of 119th.

Guinea-Bissau were also among the big climbers, moving seven places up to 103rd. The Gambia were sadly the biggest global fallers, dropping nine places down to 136th.
