The Super Eagles took another positive step towards securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a crucial 1-0 win over Rwanda on Saturday, Afrosport reports.
The three-time African champions were handed a breakthrough courtesy of a 51st-minute strike from Wolves’ new boy, Tolu Arokodare.
Victory moved Eric Chelle’s men into third place in the Group C standings, but the Eagles are still six points adrift of leaders South Africa. As things stand, Bafana Bafana are on course to secure the group’s only ticket and return to the World Cup for the first time since 2010 on home soil.
Despite the gritty win in Uyo, many Nigerians remain unsure of the Super Eagles’ chances of leapfrogging South Africa into top spot, with three matches remaining in the qualifiers – including Tuesday’s blockbuster clash against Bafana Bafana in Bloemfontein.
Imagine having to deal with Amorin, then still deal with Eric Chelle during international break.
Even if I’m wicked…. I deserve small rest and joy nau… not say I’m not even wicked 😫😭— Abdulrahman Tunde A. (@berbzz_) September 6, 2025
Full time thoughts
– Embarrassing performance. Quite disgraceful. Seems Eric Chelle and the players don’t know they are repping Nigeria
– Only positives from today are Tolu Arokodare and Benjamin Frederick
– We play like that against South Africa and we definitely lose#NGARWA— All Things Super Eagles🦅 (@AllThingsSuper_) September 6, 2025
Eric Chelle cannot take this anywhere! Where is the strategy?

Super Eagles three different managers just to qualify for the World Cup
Jose Peseiro, Finidi George and Eric Chelle

Tolu Arokodare comes on at the start of the second half… 6 minutes later, the net is bulging!
Every touch measured, every pass intelligent, every move unselfish. 🙌

In these type of games all the that matters is 3 points.
Eric Chelle – 7 points in 3 games. Finidi and Peseiro – 3 points in 4 games.
The latter are the reason we might not qualify for the World Cup.

I watched Eric Chelle’s Mali and that team played like a well oiled machine; the pressing, combinations and pressing was the best in the tournament.
Not quite the same with the Super Eagles.
Super Eagles are like Manchester United. The squad is simply uncoachable.

Is it just the players? I am yet to see a very good coach implement his style of play on the super eagles side.

You may think otherwise and that’s fine but we are actually not good enough to go to the World Cup. This team is terrible.

This is one of the poorest to be assembled for the Super Eagles. People who lack motivation and mindset to win. You played Rwanda for more than ninety minutes and managed to get one scrappy offside goal!

How come super eagles score only one goal in 8 shot on target 🎯

Super eagles coaching job now turning to be like Manchester united job
Won’t explain— Daddy(zainab & Khalid) (@Diran_aji01) September 6, 2025
The team lacks creativity and ideas. Super Eagles play from both flanks but in this game we were only using one…. So unfortunate. Uche should be in that midfield to see what he can do

Congratulations super eagles. We go again on Tuesday 🦅🦅🦅🦅
