Super Bowl LIX: How burning desire helped Hurts and the Eagles overcome Mahomes’ Chiefs

Jalen Hurts has pointed towards a burning desire within him and the Philadelphia Eagles as the catalyst towards their 40-22 triumph over the Kansa City Chiefs in the Super Bowl in New Orleans on Sunday night, Afrosport reports.

The Eagles were the dominant side at Caesars Superdome as they established a 24-0 lead at half-time and while the Chiefs tried to stage a comeback in the second half with their 22 points, the Eagles’ further 16 points were enough to hand them their second Super Bowl crown after the 2017 edition.

It was Hurts’ first Super Bowl title after he was on the losing side of the same event to the Chiefs two years ago in Glendale, Arizona. It denied Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes the chance for a three-peat but Hurts was still full of praise for the 29-year-old.

“I got a ton of respect for Pat [Mahomes] and everything he’s been able to accomplish,” Hurts said.

“Always a pleasure competing against him, utmost respect to him and I think in the end, you know, things come right on time. And, you know, the last time around, it wasn’t our time. It wasn’t my time.

“Sometimes you have to accept you have to wait your turn, you know, and dealing with everything that came with the last Super Bowl is…You still kind of leave it empty a little bit because as great as a performance was it wasn’t enough to win.

“And I think going through those emotions and processing those things and processing that experience lit a little great flame in me, enhanced my desire to win significantly. And so a ton of respect for Pat, a ton of ton of respect for the process and what it takes.”

Reacting to the defeat for the Chiefs, Mahomes said: “Any time you lose a Super Bowl and it’s the worst thing in the world, I’ll stick with you the rest of your career.

“I mean these will be the two losses that will motivate me to be even better, for the rest of my career. Because you only get so few of these and, you have to capitalise on these, and, they hurt probably more than the wins feel good.”

Mahomes was also denied winning the Super Bowl MVP for a record third consecutive time, with the award going to Hurts for the very first time.
