Spain midfielder Busquets retires from international football

Spain and Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets has announced his retirement from international football.

Busquets decided to draw the curtain on his Spanish national team career following their disappointing outing at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The 34-year-old midfielder made his international debut in April 2009 and he represented La Roja for 13 years, amassing a total of 143 appearances while scoring just twice within that period.

Busquets has had a successful career on the international scene, winning the FIFA World Cup in 2010 before securing the UEFA European Championship in 2012.

He has the third most appearances for Spain behind only Sergio Ramos (180) and Iker Casillas (167). He played at four World Cups (2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022), appearing in 17 games and equalling the Spanish record held by Ramos and Casillas.

An integral part of an iconic Spain side that dominated football for years, Busquets brings to a close an incredible spell for La Roja, sending his best wishes to the team and the newly appointed manager, Luis de la Fuente.
