South African middle-distance runner Prudence Sekgodiso clinched gold at the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China, on Sunday, Afrosport reports.

Sekgodiso won the women’s 800-metre final in a time of one minute and 58.40 seconds, etching her name in the history books.

Her victory marked South Africa’s first-ever gold medal in the event at the World Indoor Championships, as well as the fastest indoor time in the world this year.

The 23-year-old finished ahead of Ethiopian Nigist Getachew, who secured silver in one minute and 59.63 seconds, while Portugal’s Patrícia Silva took bronze with a national record of one minute and 59.80 seconds.

Defending champion Tsige Duguma of Ethiopia endured a disappointing end to the game, finishing in last place.
