Liverpool manager Arne Slot has called on his team to have a better response from Sunday’s FA Cup exit ahead of the final Merseyside Derby with Everton at Goodison Park on Wednesday, Afrosport reports.
The Reds lost to Championship bottom club Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday, ending their hopes of an unprecedented quadruple.
They could go nine points clear at the top of the Premier League if they beat Everton, who will move to their new Everton stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock next season, and Slot wants to see a much-improved performance from his team.
“It should have impact. Because if you’re working at a club like this, you should compete for every trophy.
“We said this from the start. And then to go out on the second occasion. We beat Accrington Stanley, but to lose against Plymouth is of course not acceptable. And so, as a team, and I think our fans as well are disappointed by that result.
“And yeah, now we have to show a different side of us tomorrow because it wasn’t only the result, the performance was far from what Liverpool standards are as well.”
slot revealed ahead of the crunch game that Trent Alexander-Arnold has trained with the team after missing the last two games with a thigh injury while Joe Gomez is unavailable.
“Trent has done parts of training sessions with us, not sessions, session yesterday. So, let’s see how he is today. He will train hopefully with us again,” he added.
“And then we have to decide if we take him to the game, yes or no. And Joe, it’s the same leg again where he had the injury last time. We are still assessing that, but he will definitely not be available tomorrow.”
Everton defeated Liverpool 2-0 the last time both sides met at Goodison Park last season, bringing to an end a 14-year winless derby run at home.
