Simi Awujo: Manchester United set to sign Canada international midfielder

Manchester United’s women’s team is closing in on a deal to sign Canadian international Simi Awujo.

According to the Guardian, the 20-year-old Canadian midfielder has agreed to a three-year contract with United, with the deal subject to visa clearance.

Awujo, who was born in the United States to Nigerian parents, represented the U.S. at the youth level before choosing to play for Canada at the senior level, making her debut as an 18-year-old in September 2022.

She has since made 19 appearances for the Canucks, where she most recently was part of the squad that reached the quarterfinals of the women’s football tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where they lost on penalties to Germany.

Awujo’s imminent transfer will take United’s summer signings to five players, after the acquisition of Dutch defender Dominique Janssen, Norwegian striker Elisabeth Terland, Swedish fullback Anna Sandberg, and French forward Melvine Malard.

The Women’s Super League (WSL) season gets under way on September 22, with United set to host West Ham at Old Trafford in one of the three matches the team will play at the men’s Old Trafford ground this season instead of their usual venue at the Leigh Sports Village.
