Sheffield Wednesday charged by EFL for failure of paying player wages

The English Football League (EFL) has charged Sheffield Wednesday with multiple breaches of regulations after failing to pay the wages of its players on time, Afrosport reports.

The charges are as a result of failing to pay players’ wages on time for March and May, although March’s wages were eventually paid in April, the club said it was due to debts being owed to owner Dejphon Chansiri, who has run the affairs of the club for the past 10 years.

Wednesday have been placed under registration embargoes in the last two seasons and also received a six-point deduction during the 2020-21 season for breaching the EFL’s profit and sustainability rules.

“Sheffield Wednesday Football Club has been charged with multiple breaches of EFL Regulations relating to payment obligations,” the EFL said in a statement.

“The owner of Sheffield Wednesday, Dejphon Chansiri, has also been charged with causing the club to be in breach of EFL regulations despite his commitment to fund the cash requirements of the club.

“All charges relate to both the Ultimate Beneficial Owner and the club failing to meet their obligations to pay players’ wages on time and in full in March and May 2025.

“The Club and Mr Chansiri have 14 days to respond to the charges.”

The Owls, in a statement, said Chansiri has apologised for the situation.

“The club continue to seek a resolution regarding outstanding salaries due for the month of May at the earliest possible opportunity”, it read.

“Mr Chansiri sincerely apologises to all players, coaches and staff affected and everyone connected with the club.”

The South Yorkshire outfit under the watch of head coach Danny Rohl finished 12th in the championship.
