Seven people punished over Vinicius racist abuse

Seven individuals have been handed punishments over racist behaviour towards Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr.

The Brazilian star has been the centre of attention since the racist incident he suffered during a La Liga game against Valencia last month.

A series of investigations have been carried out since then and Spain’s State Commission against Violence, Racism, Xenophobia and Intolerance in Sport handed four men fines of €60,001 and were also given a two-year stadium ban for hanging an effigy of Vinicius near Real’s training ground back in January.

Three other people were fined €5,000 and banned for one year for making racist gestures in the Valencia and Real Madrid game.

Vinicius received a red card for violent conduct in that game but was rescinded later. He claimed La Liga belonged to racists which the league president Javier Tebas snapped back at those comments saying Vinicius needed to be better informed.

Tebas tendered an apology for those comments after they received wide backlash and was seen as an attack on the 22-year-old, something the Spanish football administrator claims he did not mean to do.

La Liga embarked on a campaign displaying messages before league games that condemns racism. The Brazil national team will also play friendlies matches with Guinea and Senegal on June 17 and 20 respectively in Lisbon as part of the campaign.
