Serie A: Senegal’s Dia opens season account in Salernitana draw with Udinese

Boulaye Dia scored his first goal of the Serie A season as Salernitana played out a 1-1 draw with Udinese on Monday night.

The Senegal international became a permanent singing from Villarreal this summer after spending time on loan at Stadio Arechi last season where he netted 16 times in the Italian top flight.

Salernitana started the season with a 2-2 draw at AS Roma last week and went behind home soil against Udinese when Lazar Samardzic scored in the 57th minute. The Garnets had a reputation of earning draws last season, evidenced by the 15 games that went that way which was the highest in the top flight. They eventually leveled things up against Udinese thanks to Dia’s close range effort in the 72nd minute after a nice assist from Antonio Candreva.

Other Africans to feature for Salernitana included Dia’s countrymen Lassana Coulibaly and Mamadou Coulibaly. Cape Verde forward Jovane Cabral and Nigerian forward Chukwubuikem Ikwuemesi also featured off the bench.

For Udinese, Ivory Coast defender Hassane Kamara was the only African player to start while Nigeria’s Isaac Success and Zimbabwe’s Jordan Zemura both came off the bench. Newly-acquired Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye was an unused substitute in his very first inclusion into the Udinese matchday squad.

Salernitana will travel to Lecce in their next Serie A encounter on Sunday while Udinese host newly-promoted Frosinone at Dacia Arena on Saturday.
