Serie A: Inzaghi praises Simy’s performance despite Salernitana defeat

Salernitana manager Filippo Inzaghi praised Simy Nwankwo’s performance despite their 2-1 Serie A home loss to Bologna on Sunday.

The 31-year-old Nigerian scored in the 75th minute off an assist from Antonio Candreva after Dutch-Nigerian forward Joshua Zirkzee netted a brace in the first half.

Simy has had very limited playing time this season, failing to make the Serie A matchday squad on 11 occasions and was an unused substitute on two occasions. Despite the setback, Inzaghi was pleased with the former Crotone men’s impact off the bench on Sunday.

“We must take example from Simy, his performance was the only positive note,” Inzaghi said on the club website.

“Even though he was not listed [in the starting XI], he showed constant commitment and he played an excellent game coming off the bench.

“I have been here for seven games and I am convinced that we can achieve our goal. In difficult times we must focus only on the work ahead. We are currently three points from the safety zone and we will do everything we can to get out of this situation.”

Inzaghi also added: “The team believes in survival, I can assure you of this by seeing them in training every day. During the week the boys give their all, we must be able to demonstrate in the match what we do in training.

“We are aware of the complicated moment, now we just need to roll up our sleeves and focus on the next match and avoid making the same mistakes.”

Salernitana occupy bottom spot on the Serie A standings after 15 games. Simy will unite with his compatriot Ademola Lookman when Salernitana travel to face Atalanta next Monday.
