2021 FIFA Best Goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy has bid Chelsea goodbye after confirming his permanent transfer to Saudi Arabia club, Al Ahli.
Mendy moved to England from French club Rennes in September 2020, but he struggled for playing time last season with just 10 Premier League appearances under his belt.
The 31-year-old’s first two seasons at Stamford Bridge were full of laurels including the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup and some individual honours.
Mendy’s exit means he is the second African player to leave Mauricio Pochettino’s team after his compatriot Kalidou Koulibaly also left for Saudi Arabia to join Al Hilal.
The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations champion described his stay in England as an unforgettable experience in his career.
“Chelsea, as I prepare to begin a new chapter in my career, it’s hard to say goodbye,” Mendy wrote on Instagram.
“It has been an incredible three years wearing the Chelsea jersey, during which we achieved great success, including winning the Champions League, the UEFA SuperCup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.
“I want to sincerely thank Roman, Marina, Petr, Christophe, and the entire staff who made it possible for me to represent this prestigious club. I am thankful to my coaches and all the staffs for the invaluable lessons and growth I experienced.
“A special thanks goes to all my teammates for the unforgettable journey we shared together.
I also want to extend my deep gratitude to all the fans for their unbelievable support throughout my time at Chelsea.
“Although it’s time for me to turn a new page. I sincerely wish the club continued success with the new owners and numerous titles in the years to come.”
Mendy’s new club, Al Ahli just gained promotion to the Saudi Pro League after winning the second division title South African coach Pitso Mosimane.
