Senegal & Cameroon fail to qualify for FIFA Women’s World Cup

Senegal women ended their disappointing outing at the FIFA Women’s World Cup playoff tournament with a 4-0 loss to Haiti in the semifinal over the weekend.

The Lionesses of Teranga fell to a first-half effort from Kethna Louis and three second-half goals from Nerilia Mondesir and Roselord Borgella (brace).

However, the Caribbean nation was thrown into jubilation earlier today as the female senior football team qualified for its first ever appearance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Finals.

The 55th-ranked country in the world defeated Chile 2-1 in the intercontinental playoffs thanks to a brace from Reims’ Melchie Dumornay at the North Harbour Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand.

The 19-year-old opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time, while Mondesir missed the opportunity to double Haiti’s lead as her penalty was saved a minute before the end of regulation time.

Dumornay sealed her brace with a sublime left-footed finish eight minutes into the second half stoppage time, but Chile drew one back through a consolation goal from 35-year-old Maria Jose Rojas.

Les Grenadiers will join England, Denmark, and China in Group D at the first-ever 32-team edition of the Women’s World Cup, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand from July 20 until August 20.

In the other playoff game, the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon were stopped in their tracks, as their attempt to qualify for a third FIFA Women’s World Cup was halted by Portugal.

The Selecao das Quinas were 2-1 winners at the FMG Stadium Waikato. Diana Gomes gave them the lead in the 22nd minute, but Ajara Nchout drew the Central Africans level late in the game.

Carole Costa restored Portugal’s lead with a well-taken penalty in the 94th minute, to send them to their first-ever World Cup appearance. They will join the Netherlands, four-time winners USA, and Vietnam in Group E of the prestigious tournament.
