Scrabble: Nwali sets sight on PANASA’s President Cup

African Scrabble champion, Enoch Nwali is ready to take on top Scrabble players beyond the African continent when the maiden edition of the President’s Cup takes place in Lagos in August.

The competition, sanctioned by the Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA), will have about 150 Scrabble players from more than 20 countries in the world take on each other from the 24th to 28th of August.

Nwali came out on top at the 14th of the African Scrabble Championship which was held in the Zambian capital of Lusaka last year and compared the President’s Cup to the World Scrabble Championship owing to its global appeal.

“The African Scrabble Championship is limited to only African players but the President’s Cup is global. You can expect top players from Europe and America as well as other parts of the world,” Nwali said.

“It’s going to be a world-class tournament, something like the World Championship.”

Nwali is currently ranked second in the PANASA ratings, behind compatriot Nsikak Etim. Kenya’s Allan Oyende (eighth) is the only non-Nigerian to appear in the top 10.

PANASA President Adekoyejo Adegbesan has confirmed that eight African countries: Botswana, Cameroun, Uganda, Ghana, Zambia, The Gambia, Liberia and Sierra Leone, have all registered for the competition with 67 players from these countries also confirmed.

The total prize money on offer at the President’s Cup is $31,000 with the winner of the contest going home with $5,000.
