Salah stars as Liverpool open 11-point gap atop Premier League table

Mohamed Salah was on target once again as Liverpool beat Manchester City 2-0 at Etihad Stadium on Sunday to open an 11-point lead in the Premier League, Afrosport reports.

Salah scored and assisted for the Reds to take his season tally to 50 goal contributions, having scored 30 goals and provided 20 assists this campaign.

With Arsenal suffering a 1-0 defeat at home to West Ham United on Saturday, Liverpool entered the Etihad knowing a win would put further distance between them and the Gunners.

Arne Slot’s men drew the first blood in the 14th minute, with Salah scoring his 25th league goal of the season. The Egyptian benefitted from a deflection to beat Ederson from inside the box after a well-executed training ground routine from a corner kick.

Salah’s countryman, Omar Marmoush, thought he had drawn City level, but his far-post finish past Alisson was ruled out for offside.

The visitors quickly responded, doubling their lead with Salah turning provider for Dominik Szoboszlai, whose low strike left Ederson rooted to a spot.

Liverpool came out of the second half restart on fire, and Curtis Jones found the back of the net in the 58th minute. The English midfielder tapped the ball into an empty net off a pass from Szoboszlai, but his effort was ruled offside after a VAR review.

The Merseyside outfit held on for the win, and the result meant Liverpool had done the league double over City for the first time since the 2015-16 season.

The Reds, having played a game more, have 64 points after 27 games, while Arsenal is in second place on 53 points.

Slot’s men are in action next on Wednesday, when they host fifth-placed Newcastle United at Anfield.
